Training Curricula

Training curricula are designed for the training of early care and education professionals by qualified trainers. Each curriculum stands on its own and has its own educational objectives and handouts. They are simple to use, and the subjects can be taught easily through instructions and suggestions provided in the trainer sheets.

Health and Safety in the Child Care Setting: Prevention of Infectious Disease: A Curriculum for the Training of Child Care Providers (PDF; 1.61 MB; 171pp)

When parents are asked what is the most important thing they look for when seeking child care, a healthy and safe environment is at the top of the list. This curriculum will help early care and education providers create healthy environments and teach healthy habits to the children in their programs.

This second and updated edition covers the content of the Emergency Medical Services Authority 7-hour Child Care Preventive Health and Safety Training, and will provide information and guidance on how to control communicable and infectious disease in the early care and education. It also reflects current changes in the National Health and Safety Performance Standards for Out-of-Home Child Care Programs and new information on infectious disease.

By using this curriculum, trainers and Child Care Health Consultants will be able to:

  1. Increase awareness of the ways illnesses are spread in the early care and education programs and how to reduce this spread.
  2. Encourage providers to accept responsibility for preventing the spread of disease in their programs.
  3. Assist providers in establishing, developing and promoting written policies regarding health and safety in their programs.
  4. Help providers to understand and follow universal precautions and other preventive health practices.
  5. Provide materials that can be used as resources for early care and education providers as well as parents.
  6. Connect early care and education providers with local health and safety resources.
  7. Help early care and education providers understand how to protect themselves against exposure to infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, CMV, and hepatitis B and C.

Unintentional injuries are the leading threat to the lives and health of American children, but injuries are predictable and preventable. Injury prevention is an essential part of quality early care and education programs and a major responsibility of providers, who can prevent most injuries by planning ahead and implementing simple precautions.

This manual is a special student edition consisting of the handouts from Health and Safety in the Child Care Setting: A Curriculum for the Training of Child Care Providers. Both modules, Prevention of Infectious Disease and Prevention of Injuries, were first published in 1998 to be used by qualified health and safety trainers to fulfill part of the learning needs and licensing requirements of early care and education providers (Health and Safety Code, Section 1596.866) in California. This handbook provides trainers with the complete set of handouts for reproducing and distributing to students. Available in CD format only (English or Spanish).

  • Health & Safety in the Child Care Setting: Promoting Children's Oral Health

This oral health curriculum is written for anyone working in the field of early care and education with an interest in promoting oral health and protecting Early Childhood Caries, including Child Care Health Consultants, Child Care Health Advocates, School Nurses, Public Health Nurses and others in training/leadership positions. This curriculum provides up-to-date information and strategies about oral health that are specific to infants and young children. It also provides effective and practical lesson plans for child care providers, parents and children.

Because CCHP works with many trainers, we have developed this guide to effective training. This curriculum guides trainers through each step of the presentation, offering methods of effective communication and ways to improve the quality of trainings. The curriculum includes icebreaker activities, tips on preparing flip charts and working with equipment, suggestions for increasing questions from participants, and how to work with groups.

  • The California Training Institute Curriculum for Child Care Health Consultants

The First Edition of the California Training Institute curriculum for Child Care Health Consultants is a 6-day curriculum with 17 modules developed for health professionals to become Child Care Health Consultants. The content is primarily based on the National Training Institute for Child Care Health Consultants and includes additional information on California regulations, staff health, cultural competence, etc. The curriculum is free to download or for purchase through our publications order form (PDF; 105KB; 4pp).

The curriculum took over 4 years to develop with the help of 20 staff persons. It was modified regularly to meet the needs of our trainees and to include the most recent information available on each topic.

  • The California Training Institute Curriculum for Child Care Health Advocates

The First Edition of the California Training Institute curriculum for Child Care Health Advocates is a 3-day curriculum with 18 modules developed for Early Care and Education (ECE) professionals to become Child Care Health Advocates (CCHAs). California is the only state that has a training curriculum specifically for CCHAs. It is intended to provide knowledge and resources for people interested in serving as CCHAs in ECE programs. People who become CCHAs include teachers, assistant teachers, family child care providers, home visitors, and family or parent service workers. People who are seeking to become CCHAs should learn to assess and prioritize health and safety needs; develop plans and monitor compliance; and honestly and openly communicate with families, coworkers and administrators.
